I do something similar to this every other weekend. About 108 miles one way. And we’re 5 yrs into it. I’m looking forward to my daughter’s 18th bday in 2 yrs.

Why do you constantly follow the orders and he doesn’t? tell him you’ll meet him at your two hour point and if he’s not there within 30 minutes of they agreed about time turn around and go home.
