He was both a family man, and a man of Faith, who had proudly served his country in the Army when he was deployed to Germany as a young man. He would end up marrying the love of his life, Gloria, and together they'd go on to have 3 daughters, whom they love dearly. His daughters' social media accounts are a flood of happy family memories with Robert and Gloria, surrounded by their children and grandbabies. Robert and Gloria had been married for going on 58 years. when on April 23, 2019, he suddenly began experiencing chest pain, severe enough for him to seek the E.R. of Huntsville Hospital. Robert SHOULD have been in good hands -- Gloria and his youngest daughter, Jenny, are both Registered Nurses and were with him at the hospital that day. The physicians monitoring him in the ER at Huntsville Hospital, all agreed that Robert's condition was serious enough to warrant an ALS (Advanced Life Support) transfer from their hospital to one with a higher level of care and intervention, (in this case, that meant transferring Robert from Huntsville Hospital to University of Alabama Birmingham - aka U.A.B. Hospital), so they could better treat his cardiac event he was experiencing. Though the transport time was long (over an hour from Huntsville AL, to Birmingham AL), the ER physicians made sure that Robert was going to be transported by ambulance, on an advanced life support run, under the continuous care and monitoring of a highly skilled paramedic, who'd be dedicated to keeping Robert's heart stable and him medicated, during this long trek south to Birmingham. For the physicians at Huntsville Hospital, this meant calling their contracted medical transport provider- HEMSI (Huntsville Emergency Medical Transport INC.), to request they send an ALS ambulance with a paramedic to monitor Robert, and one to drive the rig. That fateful run, was given by HEMSI dispatch to their ALS crew consisting of paramedic Calvin Hui, and EMT-B Jacob Steele. EMT Steele, being an EMT Basic, was to be the one driving this long transport from Huntsville, to Birmingham, as he would not be able to administer cardiac medications or read the cardiac monitor EKG that Robert was hooked up to, that was EMT-P Calvin Hui's responsibility, as he was trained and experienced in cardiac care and intervention, on advanced life support patients. And furthermore, should Robert suffer a medical emergency on this very long, very arduous transport, Paramedic Hui had the medications in his drug bag, and the skills and knowledge to ensure the Robert would experience the best outcome in that event (should it come to pass). Robert, his family, the ER physicians at Huntsville, even the dispatcher at HEMSI, could never have known the true nature of who they were sending to pick up Robert for that fateful transport on April 23, 2019. They assumed, EMT Steele should be up for the job, as any indication to the contrary (say, if he was impaired, or drunk on the job) was SUPPOSED to be ferreted out, with the offender squashed/fired by HEMSI management before any patient or crew had to suffer the consequences. For EMT Jacob Steele, it was SUPPOSED to be a relatively simple trip, (a mostly straight shot down South I-65), driving Robert and Paramedic Hui. SUPPOSED to be... If only Jacob hadn't shown up to work that morning, SO intoxicated & incredibly under the influence..NOT AT ALL sober to drive... If only HEMSI management had put their money where their mouth is, and stood up for their patient, Robert, and his patients' rights, rather than chasing the huge payout of a long-distance ALS transport.
