That Wrecking Crew documentary was great - Tommy T would’ve been proud.

Love your posts. The thing I love about those mixes is that it’s super layered but it’s like pick three things that you hear. Cool, so tambourine, bass, vox. So cool.

multitracking with no multitrack... in one take..
. but essentaially the same layering process that we'd do today... except we have infinite tracks and more or less infinite kit.

Do you think it’s something about built up harmonics tickling the mic capsule? CSNY all sang in one mic and credit that as part of their sound

I was surprised while watching the Led Zeppelin doc that Page and JPJ were also session musicians in England. Freaking Gold Finger

The wall of sound was more like the wall of reverb.

Well, the ‘Big Band’ era had a ton of large groups, too and “the wrecking crew” evolved from that. Phil just doubled everything for a fat sound, using the echo chamber, & fairy sound sprinkles. ☺️

🔥🔥highly recommend the pbs series soundbreaking it covers a lot of gems like the wall of sound and the start of multitrack recording

I heard that Phil Spector killed the production game

It's sort of the opposite. More tracks were needed because of the horizons that Spector and the Beatles opened.

Phil was great but I think he took more from Leiber and Stoller than gets mentioned. They used multiple guitars (including young Phil) & lots of perc & strings on tracks like “There Goes My Baby”
