A food bank outside of Toronto has closed its doors to international students amid unprecedented demand for its services. The board president of the Ste. Louise Outreach Centre of Peel says international students should be coming to Canada with enough money to support themselves and what’s unfolding in Brampton, Ont., is a “matter of abuse.” But other food bank operators say the amount the Canadian government requires international students to budget per month to cover their living expenses isn’t enough to make ends meet because of the high cost of living. The Canadian government requires international students to prove they have at least $10,000 to cover their living expenses per year of study, and that they can pay the cost of tuition. That amounts to at least $833 a month for everything outside of tuition. The London Food Bank in London, Ont., says misleading information on social media also led to a sudden increase in usage among international students. Co-executive director Glen Pearson said staff noticed many were from London’s Fanshawe College. One YouTube post in Malayalam, a language spoken in southern India, suggested food banks in Canada could provide visitors with a regular supply of free food — instead of a resource used in emergencies. The situation in London prompted a call to Fanshawe College administration and soon an email was sent out to all students, clarifying the role of food banks. Pearson said once students were informed about how food banks work, they were apologetic. #FoodBank #CostOfLiving #InternationalStudents
