When I composed ‘The Meeting’, I wanted to create an intimate soundscape where melodic lines carried messages between the soloists, each intertwining with the story of the other, while minimal percussion echoed the universal beating of the human heart. In this arrangement for ‘When Paths Meet’ at the Holland Festival, this dialogue is carried out between pentatonic, Western harmonic sounds and Middle Eastern maqams. It was a true joy to work with the musicians who performed this work so beautifully. My thanks to Cappella Amsterdam for their shimmering harmonic vocalisations, to The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra for providing the orchestral ‘backbone’ as well as the main viola pizzicatos, and to my talented group who joined me from around the world. And many thanks also to the soloists: Huseyin Can Pala on baglama, Eyüpcan Açikpazu on ney, Onur Cicin on qanun, and Hasan Hekimoglu on oud.
