In 2014 an 18-year-old Korean competitive horseback rider posted on Facebook:
In 2014 an 18-year-old Korean competitive horseback rider posted on Facebook: "If you have no ability, blame your parents. Money is a skill too." 2 years later, millions were protesting in the streets, and her own words were on their signs. Her name was Chung Yoo-ra. Her mother, Choi Soon-sil, was the closest friend of South Korea's president for 40 years. Ewha Womans University, Seoul's top women's university, admits athletes by interview instead of exam. For 2015 it expanded the eligible sports from 11 to 23, adding horseback riding as other universities dropped it. Her Asian Games gold medal (in team dressage, a judged riding event) came 5 days after the application deadline; they counted it anyway. Candidates were forbidden to show medals. She wore hers in. The admissions director told the panel, "There is a gold medalist among the candidates, so pick her." She ranked 9th of 22 on paper, 6th after the interview, because the panel lowered the scores of 2 girls above her. Once in, Chung barely showed up but the credits kept coming: a government audit found 8 courses she had never attended once, all credited. In one design class the professor took a single photo she sent, built the assignment himself, submitted it as her work, and gave her passing grades. Teaching assistants wrote her exam answers 3 days after the audit began. Exactly one professor gave her the "F" she had earned. In her final year of high school she showed up 17 days out of 193. Letters from the riding federation excused 105 days as national-team training. But the letters were forged; the training never happened. When all of it came out, her mother got 3 years in prison for the admission by itself; the university president and the dean got 2 each, the admissions director 18 months. Prosecutors tried twice to arrest Chung, but both judges said no. At the airport she said, "I never once wanted to go to university. I don't even really know what my major was. I'm sorry." Her admission was canceled, then her high school diploma. Her final education level is now middle school graduate. Everyone around her went to prison, though the girl who wrote "money is a skill" was never charged with anything.
