In July 1981, Stevie Wonder visited Jamaica to perform at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in Montego Bay. Wonder had long been fascinated by Jamaican rhythms—he had already paid tribute to Bob Marley with his 1980 hit "Master Blaster (Jammin')". During his stay, he caught Third World’s set. Impressed by their musical versatility, dynamic stage presence, and the soaring lead vocals of William "Bunny Rugs" Clarke, Wonder approached the band backstage and proposed collaborating on their next studio project. Stevie invited Third World to his Wonderland Sound Studios in Los Angeles to record for their upcoming album, You've Got the Power The Vision: Wonder arrived with a skeletal groove and melody co-written with Melody McCully. He specifically wanted to blend Motown’s funk/disco production polish with authentic Rastafarian spiritual themes ("Jah Love"). The Process: Wonder took full control as producer. He arranged the brass, played synth bass, and meticulously coached Bunny Rugs on the lead vocal delivery to capture maximum soulful resonance. The Musical Bridge: The arrangement bridged two worlds—the driving four-on-the-floor kick drum and synth bass lines appealed to American R&B/disco DJs, while the guitar skank and Rastafarian lyrics kept the track rooted in reggae. Shortly after the record was finished, Stevie Wonder traveled back to Jamaica to perform with Third World at Jarrett Park in August 1982, performing "Try Jah Love" live in front of a massive crowd. The track became an immediate crossover success, peaking at No.14 on the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart and cracking radio station playlists across North America, Europe, and Africa. It effectively introduced Third World's "reggae fusion" sound to a global mainstream audience. NYC & Paradise Garage: Renowned dance DJs, including Larry Levan at New York's iconic Paradise Garage and Frankie Knuckles in Chicago, featured the extended mix in their sets, helping bridge the gap between reggae, disco, and early house music. DJs & Sound Systems: The song’s heavy bass synthesis made it a permanent centerpiece for sound systems in Kingston, London, and New York. Try Jah Love" remains one of the most high-profile collaborations between an African-American pop icon and a Jamaican reggae group. It built a direct cultural bridge between Motown's soul legacy and Jamaica's "Reggae Ambassadors," opening doors for subsequent 1980s reggae-pop crossovers by artists like Eddy Grant, Musical Youth, and Maxi Priest. #MusicLovers #Alex -n#Music 👇 Follow for your daily music dose!
