I have to be honest; I am angry today. It has happened again and it will happen again and again. Hearing Christians offer thoughts and prayers while refusing the most obvious action is enough to make me want to never call myself a Christian again. And yet. I’m still a Christian because days like today remind me that we are in a spiritual war, and that the forces of death are at work in this world, not just in the violent hatred of a lone gunman, but in the willful spiritual blindness of people who claim to believe in a God of peace but consistently choose violence. God is revealed to us in Jesus, coming in weakness, laying aside rights and privilege, refusing to take up arms. His cry of dereliction, “my god, my god, why have you forsaken me?” Is the cry of every victim, the cry of every parent who lost a child to gun violence. That desperate cry keeps me a Christian, because it tells me where God is found on God-forsaken days like today. God is the slaughtered victim, whose death was senseless and avoidable. God is the parent who will never see their child again and doesn’t know how to move on from that. God is the righteous anger that says enough is enough, that you cannot serve two masters, that if you say you love god and yet you sacrifice children on the alter of gun rights, it isn’t the god of Jesus you are worshipping, it is the god of American violence, a god of freedom- freedom to kill- freedom to die. Isaiah 1:15: When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. . . . #deconstruction #gunviolence #guns #shooting #christianity
