A patient at a psychiatric center has been charged with attempted murder, but a woman from his past believes that the situation could’ve been avoided. On March 2, David Trebilcock was arrested on assault and attempted murder charges. Police say Trebilcock attacked a 55-year-old female patient inside the facility, punching, kicking, and stomping on her head and face. The victim suffered severe injuries and remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. However, Allison Danough is taking aim at the justice system for letting this happen in the first place. Danough stated that Trebilcock, who she had been dating for two years, was living with her and her children in 2011. On July 19, 2011, things took a devastating turn when Trebilcock fatally stabbed her daughter, Lauren, who was 6 years old at the time. Trebilcock was charged with murder. The case was later tried in 2012 in a bench trial, meaning the verdict was decided by a judge rather than a jury. Trebilcock raised a psychiatric defense during the trial. Two psychiatrists — one hired by the defense and one by prosecutors — both concluded he should not be held criminally responsible because he was suffering from a severe mental illness at the time of the crime. The judge ultimately found Trebilcock not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect, meaning he was committed to a secure state psychiatric facility for treatment rather than sent to prison. He was moved to a non-secure metal facility in 2023. In the new case, Trebilcock’s public defender told the court the defense plans to pursue a psychiatric defense.
