@keye_necktire: Forgive me if my reading of this scene is off, I am anime-only. It seems to me that the idea here is that the way Lady Anshi tormented the late emperor as an adult may have caused him to realize to some degree how horrible he’s been to the girls he chose as consorts. This made him want to shut himself away from the world, perhaps to escape Anshi’s torment, perhaps to escape from the guilt that he may have felt for sa’ing her and the other girls as children. But I think it’s very significant that he was able to paint Anshi so beautifully not as a child, but as an adult, one who is showing love and kindness to the children who he hurt and guiding them to a brighter future. Understanding that the late emperor may have felt this way doesn’t erase the literal and figurative scars that he gave Anshi, but I think it does give her a sense of peace and fulfillment regarding the way that she’s chosen to live her life.
