@cspanofficial: Mark Carney vowed to directly take on President Trump after winning election to succeed Justin Trudeau as Liberal Party leader and Canadian prime minister. “America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” Mr. Carney said in his acceptance speech in Ottawa on Sunday. “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves,” he added. “They should make no mistake: In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.” Mr. Carney, a 59-year-old banker who has never been elected to public office before, defeated former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in the Liberal Party’s leadership election on Sunday. He previously led the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis and the Bank of England through Brexit. He won a whopping 85.9% of the votes cast by more than 150,000 Liberal Party members, and is set to be sworn in as prime minister early this week, officially ending the Trudeau era, which began in 2015. Mr. Carney is not a member of Parliament and is expected to call federal elections soon after being sworn in, which will see him face off with Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre. The Conservative Party held a commanding lead in the polls before President Trump took office and began targeting the country, which has rallied Canadians around the flag and allowed the Liberal Party to close the gap. The prime minister-designate vowed to keep in place his country’s retaliatory tariffs on the U.S., which went into effect after President Trump imposed 25% levies on most goods from Canada and Mexico. “My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect,” Mr. Carney said.
