People actually didn’t sit next to me on the train BUT it happened in rural areas. Around Tokyo people are comfy sitting next to you but not in the “unpopular” cities

I dont know it depends because both my friend and I had people get up and move away from us on the train. I throughly enjoyed the extra space.

I only stayed in Japan for 2 months but there was definitely ppl who avoided sitting next to me and my friend 😭 that might not be ur experience but it happens to a lot of ppl

Actually, there's been a shift. I've been to Japan numerous times, and the seats next to me on crowded trains stayed empty. Just came back from (5 year hiatus), and that was no longer the case! 😂

I live an hour outside Tokyo and I’ve had people get up and move but it’s not because I’m a foreigner 95% of the time 😅. People just wanted space. I did however experience this in onsens where women will vacate a bath I’m sitting in which honestly is not a bad thing to me 😂

i feel like a lot of the myths peddled by jp travel “influencers” like gaijin seat and not walking around while eating food are from like the early 00s and aren’t really applicable to modern day japan

i think its people seeing them get up and move when seats open up? at first what i thought that was the gaijin seat until i saw them do it to other jp ppl so i think ppl just want space lol

I think this really depends, ofc from a busy airport all seats are taken. In my experience, if there were empty seats on the train, the ones next to me were usually last to go

I was looking forward to it but they do NOT care, a seat is a seat. I had an elderly woman fall asleep on me as well, she apologized when she woke up though.

Been to japan many times and all around. Never happened in a way that felt about being a foreigner. People just give space when able, when not we all crowd together
