@missclairebenjamin: 🚨Handling the “needy” one👇 When you’re managing someone and it feels like they aren’t showing initiative and come to you looking for support with what seems like every little thing it can start to feel exhausting and draining. Everyone is different and some people need more reassurance and support to feel confident in their own decision making. It’s hard not to get frustrated & criticise but it’s important to try and avoid this and instead try a different approach to help shift the dynamic. As managers sometimes we unintentionally contribute to the dynamic because when our team member comes to us with a problem we tell them the answer instead of helping them become more confident problem solving independently. Whilst this is well intended it can mean that they do not develop their own problem solving skills. I’d recommend using a coaching approach to build their confidence and help them feel safe making decisions more autonomously. This may also require you to release some control which can take practice. These are both powerful questions: 1️⃣ What do you think would be a good approach? 2️⃣ How did you approach a situation similar to this in the past? Be sure to encourage their self- belief and keep a watch on your own desire to always tell them the answers. Over time you should start to see a shift in their confidence. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. You’ve got this 💪 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this situation? The problem is that it’s so hard to teach common sense and critical thinking skills 🥺

As someone who was humiliated and bullied by a former manager, this really helps. I know I can do a good job but the fear of being put in that situation again makes me seek extra reassurance sometimes

It’s difficult when you’ve been in education so many years where people always want you to ask questions! There seems to be less guidance in the workplace

I always need to check bc my boss gatekeeps information and there’s always some pertinent context that i am unaware of. Makes it almost impossible to proceed.

People don’t act freely when supervisors micro manage & withhold information. As a result they constantly require guidance & being piecemealed

If I ask for help I’m not taking ownership and initiative. If I don’t ask and get on with it, I’m not using effective communication or working in a team. How do I even attempt to win??

My coach at work would ask me in these situations “what do you think the client wants you to say? How does that align with our motivations/strategy with this client?”

it's me, I'm the needy one. I don't have the confidence to make a choice because I'm afraid I'll get it wrong and people will think I don't know what I'm doing. this is really helpful!

I have experienced this and it’s so hard. I do feel bad for people as they clearly are insecure but it’s such a drain to have to write out emails constantly for someone else. We get paid the same

This employee didn't even bother to think. It's frustrating and super time consuming for the manager.

Haha my boss said “don’t say anything” okay but they’re in front of me. What do you want me to say? “Say nothing!” So just sit there silently??? “No!” THEN WHAT

Manager needs to look at the way they manage. This is often the behaviour from employees of micro managers. It’s a sign! When emplyees feel no matter what they decide, it will not be right.
