His tongue was so abnormally enlarged that it hindered his speech, which he only acquired at the age of eight, while rickets, hydrocephalus, and chronic bone weakness prevented him from walking until he was five. Tormented from childhood by continuous epileptic seizures, smallpox, measles, and severe kidney failure, his fragile mind soon slipped into chronic paranoia. Incapable of producing an heir due to monorchidism having a single, atrophied testicle the court convinced the monarch that he had fallen victim to a demonic curse, subjecting him to a never-ending nightmare. ​In his final years, in a mad attempt to break the spell, he was handed over to exorcists who forced him to sleep beside the mummified corpses of his ancestors, exhumed from the royal mausoleums. Charles II died at just 38 years old after an agonizing decline; the autopsy on his body revealed a gruesome picture: a shriveled heart the size of a peppercorn, completely corroded lungs, a brain filled with water, a single testicle "black as charcoal" and a gangrenous intestine. #History #habsburgs #charlesii #familytree #viral
