#duet with @journeywithmynana While I find it rewarding, taking care of dementia patients is very challenging. Tonight I appreciate nurses who do this on a daily basis. It is not easy.. I have about 40 dementia patients that I provide primary care services for them and it is a battle keeping them safe throughout the year. I struggle when I have to send them to the hospital for anything. The last thing you want to do is take them away from their environment. That sets them back in their transition. Take them to a big hospital with lots of stimulation and all hell breaks loose. As a provider, every decision you make for dementia patients must be customed to their needs. Picture a provider who orders daily lab draws on a dementia patient. That is a daily fight. Is it necessary ? It's a constant fight with families, nurses and their facilities who question why providers push back on just sending them to the hospital. We try to avoid it as much as possible. Picture yourself trying to get an MRI or CT on this lady, or Even blood. Falls- It's difficult to explain the limitations that they now have and so they forget to use the assistive devices(Wheel chairs, walkers) and then boom, they fall. Some of the meds that these guys are on to control their behaviours expose them to fall risks. Lastly, but not least, Dementia is not only a brain/ memory disease. As it progresses, you start seeing the whole body get affected. All of a sudden mom and dad have issues swallowing now and so they start to develop recurrent Pneumonia. They get weak and so they are falling constantly. Their appetite gets worse and so massive weight loss occurs. They are not drinking enough and so the risk for dehydration, Urinary tract infections is higher. #nursepractitioner #familynursepractioner #dementiaawareness #Dementia #dementiacaregiver #dementiapatients #alzheimersawareness #kenyansinusa🇺🇸🇰🇪😀 #cardiacarrest #happythanksgiving
