my father used to walk with a pole or walking stick of any kind to protect himself from loose dogs etc etc . seen many people do this especially late at night/early morning

Figuring he’s had to deal with dogs before walking at night. I walk in the daytime but carry a staff just as a precaution. Wouldn’t want to hurt an animal but more for defense against anything.
