With even the most basic storage methods- like keeping them cool, ensuring good air circulation to reduce ethylene (the natural ripening gas), and choosing varieties known for their long shelf life- apples can stay fresh for months.📆 But on a larger scale, MOST of our fruit goes to high-tech storage warehouses with Controlled Atmosphere (CA) rooms. The difference? Precision. These rooms go beyond simple refrigeration by fine-tuning oxygen, carbon dioxide, and humidity levels to slow down ripening even further. Some apples also receive a treatment with 1-MCP (1-Methylcyclopropene), this temporarily blocks ethylene receptors, helping the fruit stay firm & fresh for even longer. With CA storage, we can get oxygen levels incredibly low—sometimes as little as 1%, and carefully monitor gas levels to keep apples in peak condition until they’re ready to be enjoyed.
