@gautama_buddha_shakyamuni An Introduction to Therigatha: Poems of Elder Buddhist Nuns - 02 - Therigatha, “Theri” meaning “Elder nuns” and “gatha” meaning “verses”, is a collection of 73 poems composed by or about the elder Buddhist nuns who had attained enlightenment during the life time of Lord Gautama Buddha. The verses that are attributed to the Buddha must have been uttered when the Buddha was alive during the 6th and 5th century BC. However, it has been suggested that some verses of Therigatha may have been added during the first Buddhist council or even later on right up to the 3rd century BC. Apart from it’s religious and spiritual significance, it is also considered as the oldest collection of poems by women in India. The poems of Therigatha are all written in the language of Pali, which is the language in which the Buddha’s teachings are recorded within the Theravada tradition of Buddhism. Theravada Buddhism is considered as the oldest and the most orthodox tradition of Buddhism. However, it has also been suggested by Buddhist scholars that initially the poems may have been recorded in several ancient Indian vernacular languages and then re-written in the language of Pali at a later time. In the Pali canon, Therigatha is usually accompanied by the other book named Theragatha, which is a collection of the poems by elder senior monks during the time of the Buddha. The contents of the poems can be considered as inspired utterances of the elder nuns following the attainment of enlightenment by cultivating the path of liberation. The poems also speak about the social back ground that the nuns came from, the struggles that they have been through as women in the Indian society at that time, what attracted them to the Buddhist path and the short or the long journey that they had to travel as ordained nuns before attaining Nibbana. They seem to have come from a wide variety of social and economic back grounds as well as age groups and personal situations. By the time of their going forth as nuns, they had been young and old, rich and poor, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, queens and princesses, orphans, potential brides, wives, widows and sex workers.
