It might look like a consequence, but this wasn’t about punishment. When kids are dysregulated, they’re often not able to access the parts of their brain responsible for listening, problem-solving, and self-control. Instead of immediately jumping to time-outs, lectures, or yelling, I like to ask myself, “What does their nervous system need right now?” One of my favorite tools as a pediatric OT is heavy work—activities that make muscles and joints work against resistance. Things like pulling weeds, pushing a wheelbarrow, carrying watering cans, raking leaves, digging, or helping in the garden provide calming sensory input that helps regulate the nervous system. Add in a little sunshine and fresh air, and you’ve got a powerful combination that can: ✨ Improve attention ✨ Support emotional regulation ✨ Increase body awareness ✨ Help your child feel calmer and more organized The goal isn’t to make yard work a punishment. It’s to meet your child where they are and give their body what it needs so they can be more successful afterward. Sometimes the fastest way back to listening isn’t another reminder, it’s helping regulate the body first. #preschooler #occupationaltherapy #sensoryplay #gentleparenting #parentingtips
