Transforming our Firepit: A Simple DIY Upgrade 🔥🌿 We took our backyard firepit to the next level with a few easy-to-find materials and a bit of elbow grease. Here’s the step-by-step breakdown of how we did it: 1. Choosing the Planters: After a trip to Home Depot, we picked up 4 plastic planters (one for each pole). These planters were affordable and durable—perfect for our humid South Florida climate. While wood might’ve given it a more rustic look, I was worried it would rot too quickly in this weather. Plastic was a practical choice for longevity. 2. Concrete Mixing Setup: We used quick-drying cement (one bag per pot), which we mixed in a painter’s bucket—the size was just right for a single bag of concrete. Now, here’s a tip: don’t even think about mixing by hand. Invest in an electric drill with a concrete mixer attachment (this will save you SO much time!). We went with a wired drill, not battery-powered, to ensure we had enough power to mix everything properly. 3. Breaking Up the Concrete: When mixing the cement, make sure to break up the larger chunks. This helps create a smoother consistency. Once the mix is lump-free and smooth, you’re ready to pour! Maintaining the Shape: Here’s where the painter’s tape comes in handy! It’s perfect for maintaining the shape of the planters while the concrete sets. We wrapped the tape around the planter to ensure it stayed circular (instead of oval) and to keep the poles straight while the concrete hardened. It worked better than expected—simple but effective! 4. Adding the Poles: For the poles, we found these metal poles with hooks on Amazon. These hooks made it super easy to hang the lights later on. We placed the poles in the center of each planter and used the painter’s tape to secure them while the concrete set. We repeated this process 3 more times for a total of 4 planters. 5. Letting the Concrete Set: After pouring the concrete, we waited for it to set. Once dry, I used my electric drill again to make small drainage holes (about ¼ inch above the concrete line) to avoid water buildup. 6. Finishing Touches: We filled each planter with soil and planted ferns and flowers to add some greenery and hide the concrete. To give it that perfect finishing touch, we strung up some solar-powered lights around the poles. We didn’t want to deal with wiring, so solar was the perfect solution—these lights have been going strong for over 2 years! The Big Reveal: Once everything was in place, we stood back and admired our work. The firepit looks amazing, and now we can enjoy cozy nights outdoors with beautiful lighting and lush plants around the fire. 🌿🔥 Want to upgrade your firepit too? Comment
