I'm here at the new $1.3 billion Burbank Airport, which just opened on October 13th, and it looks exactly like every other airport in America. Blindfold me, drop me in here, and I could not tell you if I'm at JFK, Salt Lake City, or LAX. And that's the problem. Now look, I get it. The old terminal was almost 100 years old. It was cramped, it was outdated, it needed to be replaced. I'm all for fixing aging infrastructure. But it had history, and it had charm. It opened in 1930, before LAX even existed, and it was LA's main airport. Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes flew out of here. During World War II, they covered the whole thing in camouflage netting so it would look like a neighborhood from the sky And next year, that old building is getting torn down. Gone. Another piece of old Hollywood glory gone forever… And what did we get instead? Fine, let's go through it. It's way bigger. Higher ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows. One giant security checkpoint. Wireless charging at every gate. Baggage claim is finally indoors. There's a seven-story parking garage, a bar overlooking the runway, and rotating art from local artists. Cool. Great. Every new airport has that. It's the same open hall, the same seats, the same airport bar we've seen a thousand times. The only piece of old Burbank they kept is walking out onto the tarmac. That's it. And this isn't just an airport thing. Every time we build something new, we lose a piece of history and get something that feels sterile and looks exactly like everything else. Why can't we upgrade things without erasing what made them special? Do you like the new terminal, or do you miss the charm of the old Burbank? Follow World Wide Wil and let me know in the comments. Mf each other: built for efficiency, stripped of personality. Progress matters. I just wish it didn’t always mean erasing the past to make room for it. So what do you think? Is this progress, or are we losing a little of what makes LA special?
