On a hot July day in 2005, I was so very lucky to be able to attend STS-114 Space Shuttle Launch at Kennedy Space Center in Florida (Very Hot and Muggy day). I was a guest of "The Cronies"- a group of men of some interesting backgrounds. The 'leader' of this band of friends is NASA Astronaut Fred Gregory (3 Missions, 2 as Commander and all were DOD missions. At the time of this Return to Flight Mission, Fred stepped up from deputy director to Director of NASA between Griffion and Okeefe's directors hip runs. That made this trip extra special...if you want to attend a Space Shuttle Launch, do it as a guest (I think the "Cronies" all close friends + me, was about 9 people and we had our own special bus and driver that took us EVERYWHERE at KSC. Eileen Collins was the Commander of this Mission. Saw her come across DFW area at night on a rare Night landing at Kennedy in Florida- trailing a long pinkish, magenta plasma trail on its return from Orbit in the dark skies over Texas in the 90s. Also, as a Fort Worth, Texan, I went outside to watch Columbia return when it was a large ever branching set of trails of white smoke heading to east Texas and dropping parts all along the way. Lastly, Fred Gregory was the CAPCOM for Challenger on that fateful day in 1986 when it was lost. It's an interesting set of synchronicities that make one hold this experience almost like a long story with this as the last interaction with a Shuttle, outside of the remaining Orbiters in Museums. Oh, I once owned the R/H Lockheed SR1, modified SR-71 Ejection Seat that was in OV-101, "Enterprise" which I later donated to the USAF's Life Sciences Equipment Lab when it was at Brooks AFB in San Antonio. It was an audacious program, but I Loved the majesty and awe of the Space Shuttle Program. RIP Challenger and Columbia and the Astros' we lost. Ever Forward, Ever Upward we go. #nasa #spaceshuttle #fyp #2005 #fly #curator #cool friends #spaceshuttlediscovery #sts114 #experiences #life #kennedyspacecenter #ksc #history #Space #spacethings #pilot #croniesguest
