10 DOCKER MISTAKES that only bite you in production. 1. Running as root If the container is compromised, excessive privileges increase the potential impact. 2. No .dockerignore Secrets, dependencies, build artifacts, and unnecessary files can get copied into the build context. 3. Using `latest` in production You lose a predictable reference to exactly what version is running. 4. Bloated images Full OS layers and build tools make images larger and deployments slower. 5. Skipping multi-stage builds Compilers and build dependencies don't need to ship in the final runtime image. 6. Secrets in image layers Deleting a secret in a later layer doesn't guarantee it disappears from earlier layers. 7. No health checks A container can be running while the application inside it is broken. 8. Ignoring layer caching Poor instruction order can invalidate expensive cached layers. 9. One container, many processes Mixing app, cron, logging, and other processes makes failure isolation harder. 10. No resource limits One runaway container can consume resources and affect neighboring workloads. Docker works locally.
