@dr.insanity.crime: Deming, NM- A mother and father were arrested after it was discovered they made their 8 children sleep on old mattresses in underground caves- but that’s not the worst of it. New Mexico State Police began investigating Melvin Cordell, 50, and Valerie Cordell, 41, after their 16 year old daughter reported abuse while at the NM National Guard Youth Challenge Academy is Roswell. When police arrived at the home to investigate, they said the home resembled a landfill. There were large buckets of human waste throughout the property, as well as rotted food, old clothes, broken down vehicles, broken appliances, trash, and damaged trailers used for storage.  Valerie led detectives to the “caves,” which were 4-5 ft deep, and some were connected by tunnels. Each hole had an old mattress down in it along with a large bucket filled of excrement. It was determined the kids slept in the holes or one of the broken vehicles year round. The oldest son son slept in the broken down white van seen in the photograph. The kids range in age from 6 months to 16 years, and the older children told authorities that Melvin and Valerie would withhold food for two days at a time for punishment. The oldest daughter told police that she had become pregnant by her father on two different occasions, once when she was 13 and the other time when she was 16. Both pregnancies were non-consensually terminated by her father, and he disposed of the remains. She also told detectives that he allowed two other adult relatives to molest and take photographs of her. Melvin and Valerie were both arrested on February 21. He was originally charged with 16 counts of child abuse, one count of conspiracy to commit child abuse, two counts of criminal sexual penetration, and one count of criminal sexual contact with a minor. After police learned about the pregnancies and abortions, he was also charged with two counts of aggravated battery involving great bodily harm and tampering with evidence. He has a total of 24 charges. Valerie was charged with 16 counts of child abuse and one count of conspiracy to commit child abuse.
