It's not typical of TX style to use brown sugar at all, nor to braise brisket, which tends to make the pot roast flavor, rather than the smoked brisket. If you must, cut the sugar to 1/4 cup.

im a baker, but possibly try mixing the beer and brown sugar together, the sugar ratio is high enough that instead of desolving in the liquid it will create a paste, maxing a weird rub?
