I’m guessing the question was about covering the upper part of the neck, closer to the jaw… and I guess it if went higher up, they wouldn’t be able to mode their heads properly?

Every hockey player should wear a neck guard! I know of a few junior players who tragically lost their lives- neck injuries from blades
