In the Soviet Union, a personal car was practically a member of the family, and washing it could turn into an entire Saturday ritual. My friends and I would meet at the garages, load buckets, sponges, old polishing cloths, and Maksimych’s prized German car shampoo, then drive together to our favorite spot by the river. Mikhaylych came in his orange Zhiguli, I followed in my black Volga, and Maksimych arrived in his unusual blue right-hand-drive Toyota Mark II. We washed every inch of the cars, vacuumed the interiors, polished the bodies, and carefully made the tires shine. By lunchtime, our cars were drying in the breeze while we cooked meat and potatoes over a small fire and drank strong tea. At sunset, we drove back into town tired and smelling of the campfire, but incredibly proud as our freshly polished cars reflected the evening light. #USSR #sovietunion #History #story
