my grandad bought his house in the 60s, for 9k, got a 7k mortgage and then was made redundant 2 weeks later, got a 14k payout and paid his house off.

We bought a £200k house with sub £20k salaries. The victim mentality is so dull

massive price correction needed but the people with power are making a fortune with high house prices

Very Misleading. Interest rates were 17% which means a retail mortgage would be 20%. So on a current day 290k that would cost 58k in interest alone per year. You kids have it Soo easy!!

Yeah BUT we actually stopped wasting money on takeaways (including Costa etc) and lived within our means in order to save up and now we have bought a house. There is some truth to it…

The average salary is so misleading, £17.78P/H isn’t “average”. council workers, “binmen” police officers, lower band nurses, retail workers, Some HGV drivers aren’t on that kind of wage.

yeah but people also earned considerably less money back in the day. they also worked longer more extreme hours. a lot of Northern families worked in the mines. they went down to the pit. the ratio of house prices is exactly the same. it was expensive back then because they were paid a lot less. the ratio is the same is just moved up in numbers.

Households used to purchase on one income as typically only the man worked. Now most households are 2 incomes so you should factor that into your calculation

My mum and dads house in 1975 cost £1000…. well below the ‘average’ just like today, there are also houses available well below the national average 🙄 You can buy a house for under £100K .. stop buying avocados

if you look at a graph of house prices it can be summised as “if you bought before 2005 then you’re laughing… if you bought before 2000 then even more so”

I bought a 100k home. Stayed in it for 5 years. Changed the bathroom etc to add value . I’m now in a 300k home . Yes cutting back helps. I didn’t go on mad nights out like I used too……I’m 34!

It's probably even worse if you compare the property size. Look at the price pet metre, because properties are getting smaller.
