Join me on a beautiful city break to Carlisle, just 1 hr 30 by train with @Northern Trains from Newcastle, it’s perfect for a car free getaway.  Carlisle is a compact city so ideal for a car free break - it's so easy to explore by foot. My first stop was @Tullie - art gallery, museum and cafe. Home to almost 1 million objects telling the story of Carlisle and Cumbria, there is something for everyone here. I particularly enjoyed seeing one of the largest dedicated costume galleries in the north before enjoying a light lunch at Tullie's new cafe.   From there I was off to explore @English Heritage Carlisle Castle, one of the most besieged castles in England, it has the most incredible history including surviving seven sieges by the Scots and holding Mary Queen of Scots prisoner. Then it was off to my home for the night, The Halston, a beautiful aparthotel. It's just a few minutes walk from the station so ideal for your car free getaway in Carlisle.  Featuring townhouse apartments and hotel style rooms, the Halston also boasts a gym, two bars and a restaurant.  I dined at @PennyBlue, lovingly named after a very rare stamp from the 1840s, a nod to the restaurants former home as Carlisle's post office.  After a great nights sleep and a delicious breakfast I was up and on my way to Carlisle Cathedral, home to the famous starry ceiling. I enjoyed a very special "angel's view tour", the 30 min tour takes you on a climb up to the clerestory to experience the cathedral in a truly unique way.    My weekend ended with Afternoon Tea in one of the most beautiful dining spaces in the city.  Cathedral Cafe sits in the footprint of the medieval cloister with incredible views of the cathedral. Their afternoon teas are homemade with delicious bitesize treats, sandwiches and scones ... The perfect way to fill my tummy before catching my train back to Newcastle.  I think this may be your sign to plan your own car free adventure in Carlisle.
