Not only is Jesus pointing out that God is the God of the living & not the dead, He’s making an argument from the tense of the “to be” verb (ειμι). God says “I AM the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” - not WAS. Masterful logic from the Master.

I think it's two fold since they were spiritually alive but their bodies are still dead til the resurrection when Jesus comes back.

you seem to have misspoken, Jesus uses that statement alongside the already accepted teaching that God is not the God of the dead but of the living to conclude that the resurrection is true.

I'd have to check but I think this has additional meaning because the argument only works in the Greek so it implies the Sadducees he's talking to don't read the original Hebrew?
