Yes phantom pain is very real (I’ve been a RN for 26 years). It has to do with nerve paths and it takes time for the brain to be “reprogrammed”.

I think this is really interesting because cells carry memory. So if the limb is disconnected and the body still living, maybe the cells are still communicating. Just a thought.

Similar thing happened to my Great uncle; lost his leg just below the knee,they buried it (also in their yard)and he kept having ankle pain.They dug it up,repositioned it,buried it and no more pain

idk about her Aunt's experience, but my mom was a double amputee above the knee & she would complain her "foot" itched or she felt "knee" pain. Phantom pain is real.

I grew up with my grandma telling me the story of her aunt lost her arm from the elbow down (I don't remember how) and like a month after she was just always complaining about her fingers hurting they went and dug up her arm and fixed her fingers and she never had another problem

As a nurse, it is very common for a patient who has lost a limb to suffer from phantom pain. It is extremely painful and it can last for years.
