Yeah that is a restaurant no will miss if it closes down doing that kinda stuff. Tipping is not required it is a gratuity.

There should never be an automatic gratuity. No matter the size of the party. We are not required to tip. Stop getting mad at the customer and get mad at the business owners that don’t pay you enough

Most restaurants automatically charge a gratuity for large groups, posted on menu so you can stay or go elsewhere. If policy stated 15% then they were wrong for charging 18% on random checks.

Tipping is a catch 22. To pay the right wage means all prices of food must go up but servers technically make less. Tip stays some servers walk away with a lot at one time but inconsistent
