Five years ago I would’ve told you Christians shouldn’t watch Spider-Man. 😂 I mean… I literally did tell you. Looking back, I cringee at this video (I didn’t include the full 2021 video here 😂), but I also smile because I know my heart genuinely wanted to honor the Lord. If I’m honest, I also thought it was my responsibility to manage not only my own convictions, but everyone else’s too. Over the last several years, the Lord has done a deep work in my heart. I haven’t become less passionate about holiness. If anything, I love Jesus more today than I ever have. I still turn movies off when I feel convicted. There are things I personally won’t watch that other sincere believers have peace watching. The difference is that I’ve learned conviction is the Holy Spirit’s job, not mine. Conviction draws us closer to Jesus, but control makes us think it’s our job to manage everyone else’s relationship with Him. Do I believe we should guard what we allow into our hearts? Absolutely. Scripture is clearr about that. But I’ve also learned that not every believer will have the exact same convictions in areas where we have to rely on the Holy Spirit. For a long time, I thought holiness meant creating more rules and making sure everyone around me lived by them too. But the closer I’ve gotten to Jesus, the more I’ve realized the Holy Spirit is incredibly faithful to lead His children. He doesn’t need me to manufacture conviction out of fear / anxiety or become everyone else’s conscience. Ironically, I feel freer today. My heart is more tender toward the Lord, I know I’m His daughter, I love people more than I ever have, and my greatest desire is still to please Him. 🙌🏼 So no… this isn’t me saying, “Do whatever you want.” 😂 It’s me saying, “Walk closely enough with Jesus that you recognize His voice.” If He convicts you to turn something off, obey Him. That’s most important!! Jesus is worthy of it all. The only web I needed to get untangled from was legalism… 😂🤪❤️🕸️
