There are swamps in South Carolina where the darkness feels crowded. Scape Ore Swamp, near Bishopville, is one of them. In the summer of 1988, something supposedly stepped out of that darkness and became one of the state’s most enduring nightmares. Seventeen-year-old Christopher Davis had stopped around 2 a.m. to change a flat tire near the swamp when he saw what he later described as a seven-foot creature with green, wet-looking skin, glowing red eyes, scales, and three fingers. He didn’t describe it like an animal he couldn’t identify. He called what he saw a “red-eyed devil.” (UPI) According to Davis, the thing came at him from the darkness fast enough to make him abandon everything and dive into his car. He said that even after he drove away, the creature kept pace with the vehicle, eventually grabbing at it and climbing onto it. The most unsettling part of the story isn’t just the description of a seven-foot reptilian humanoid—it’s the idea of being alone on an empty South Carolina road at two in the morning, hearing something running toward you, and realizing that whatever is chasing you is fast enough to keep up with a moving car. (UPI) Then came the other reports. A local couple found their car badly damaged near the swamp: chrome battered, molding ripped away, wires pulled from the engine and the hood ornament broken. Other people claimed something had chased them from the swamp itself. Investigators later found enormous three-toed tracks leading toward the water, reportedly spaced in strides of around six feet. Even the sheriff’s department became involved, though Sheriff Liston Truesdale remained skeptical about what the creature actually was. (UPI) Maybe it was a bear. Maybe it was a hoax. Maybe fear and a few strange events created a monster that never existed. But Scape Ore Swamp still has one advantage over every explanation: nobody ever proved exactly what Christopher Davis saw that night. And that’s what makes the story stick. Somewhere beyond the road, past the tree line and the black water, there is still the image of those red eyes reflecting in the darkness—watching a stranger change a flat tire, waiting until he’s alone, and then running toward him. #sc#scaryr#creepya#paranormalr#cryptidf#ufo
