@caylee.mastin: I’m heartbroken and frustrated. I reached out to Milford High School and asked if they could do something to honor Caylee at graduation. Their response? Her name would be listed in the program. I humbly asked for more—a simple gesture, like placing an empty chair where her friends could lay a flower as they walk. It’s a small but meaningful tribute. But I’ve received no response. Sadly, this is nothing new. The day after Caylee died, her friends put up a photo to memorialize her. The staff tore it down, leaving her friends in tears. When I asked about placing a monument at the school, I was told no. They allowed a brief mention of her name at the Mental Health Awareness Game—but let’s be real, they profit from that game, so it came at no cost to them. And now, I’m being ignored again. I’ve also been told by several students that Caylee was left out of the yearbook entirely. Erased. Forgotten. Throughout all of this, the school has repeatedly quoted, “It’s important to avoid sensationalizing the cause of death or taking actions that make suicide seem like an appealing act to others.” So all Caylee is to them is the way she died. That’s what defines her in their eyes. But why can’t we sensationalize the way she lived? Why can’t we honor her spirit, her kindness, and the impact she had on those around her? I am asking for the community’s help. Please stand with me in calling on Milford High School to do right by Caylee. She was a part of this school, and she deserves to be remembered. Whether it’s by reaching out to the school, sharing this post, or simply making your voices heard—it matters. Let’s not allow them to sweep her memory under the rug. So, all Caylee is to them is the way she died. But why can’t we sensationalize the way she lived? Her kindness, her compassion, her light—that’s what deserves to be remembered. Honoring who she was isn’t glorifying her death—it’s refusing to let it define her. And here’s what makes no sense to me: Why do we encourage students to talk about their suicidal thoughts and seek help, but when it actually happens, we don’t talk about it? We tell them to come forward, to be vulnerable—but when tragedy strikes, it’s treated like a shameful secret.
