In a recent interview with CBS News, the 70-year-old actor opened up about his career, saying he doesn’t identify with the typical Hollywood label. “What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon, so I’m a ‘Mt. Vernon actor,’” he said, referring to his hometown in New York. “I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means.” Washington, who has earned Oscars for his roles in Glory (1989) and Training Day (2001), explained that he considers himself a stage actor before anything else: “I’m a stage actor who does film; it’s not the other way around. I did stage first. I learned how to act on stage, not on film.” His comments come as he takes on the role of Othello in the new Broadway production of Shakespeare’s Othello, alongside #JakeGyllenhaal.
