I have a chapter where the two characters are lying to each other. the reader knows they're both lying but both characters trust each other. so that's fun :)

Interesting. I would probably solve it completely the opposite way: I'd skip it. 😅 End of previous chapter: they start conversation. Start of new chapter: One character is stunned in disbelief. End.

Yeah, every dialogue needs conflict, big or small. Also, try to make it do several things at once. Drop not just exposition but also characterization, or add/advance a subplot.

What I do is give up half the information and let my MC figure out the rest through the plot. It also makes the reader have to guess but following the inner monologue, we aren’t completely blindsided
