@guidepostmontessori: Young children can’t regulate their emotions on their own. When they’re overwhelmed, they rely on us to co-regulate—to borrow our nervous system so they can feel safe. This is why yelling at a dysregulated child doesn’t help—it only adds more chaos to an already overwhelmed brain. If we want our kids to grow into emotionally regulated adults, we have to show them how. And that starts with learning to regulate ourselves. Here’s how to strengthen your own self-regulation so you can better support your child: ✨ Pause before responding. Take a deep breath. Give yourself a second to collect your thoughts before reacting. ✨ Lower your voice instead of raising it. When emotions run high, speaking more quietly encourages connection rather than escalation. ✨ Label emotions without judgment. “I see that you’re really frustrated right now.” Naming emotions helps children make sense of their feelings. ✨ Practice self-care. It’s easier to stay calm when your own needs are met—prioritize rest, hydration, and moments of stillness when possible. ✨ Repair when needed. No one is a perfect parent. If you lose your cool, acknowledge it: “I got upset and yelled. I wish I had stayed calm. I’m working on that.” This teaches emotional accountability. Learning to regulate isn’t about being perfect—it’s about practicing. The more we do it, the more our children learn from us. And that’s what will shape them into emotionally strong, self-regulated adults.
