@whileyouwonder: Did you think ‘everybody’ did that? 👄👀 Where do *you* look? 💬 Autistic people often look less at others’ eyes and more at their mouths, especially as they get older. This isn’t about avoiding connection—it can actually help with understanding speech or social info in a way that feels more natural (Grossman et al., 2019). Other research backs this up too: autistic folks tend to spend less time on eyes and more on mouths when reading facial expressions, which is just a different (and valid) way of processing social cues (Dalton et al., 2005). P.S. What I share is based on my experience as an autistic autism assessor and speech pathologist, the lived experiences of the autistic community, and what I’ve seen across 8 years of autism assessments. These insights reflect common themes I’ve observed in 'clinical' settings, assessment conversations, and client storytelling. It may not apply to everyone, and research is still catching up on a lot of this! While this content is not intended as ‘clinical’ advice, it draws on my lived and professional experience to make space for shared understanding and further discussion. I’d love to see more research in this space, and I’m always open to chatting with or supporting researchers – especially autistic researchers – who feel called to explore and build on these insights. There’s so much more to discover together! #autism #adhd #neurodivergent #autismassessor

I can't hear you if I can't see your mouth. The mouth provides my subtitles. I also need subtitles when I'm watching things. My hearing is fine, btw. 😆

I watch the mouth but then if their teeth are bad I don't want them to think I'm looking at their teeth so then I panic and look random places I guess

I thought it was normal. I thought I was normal. Now with a diagnosis I see how not normal I am in every little thing. It’s hard to deal with alone

During COVID I couldn’t hear anyone because I couldn’t see their mouth to see the words come out their mouth!! I’m an excellent lip reader because of this!!

I have a harder time making eye contact when I'm the one talking. I look everywhere but at the eyes.

I can't understand people if I can't read their lips while they talk. same reason I can't hear the TV without subtitles

it keeps me from looking at one eye and then the other. or feeling cross-eyed looking at the spot between the eyebrows. I have a running dialog in my head to say I can stop looking at their eyes now.

it enrages me when someone's mouth moves funny and I don't like it. I used to avoid people like the plague because they were weird mouth movers.
