Groups including Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa launched a "Correct the Map" campaign, pushing schools, media outlets and international bodies to switch to a fairer alternative such as the Equal Earth projection. Equal Earth was created in 2018 specifically to preserve the true relative size of continents while still keeping their shapes recognizable. Under Equal Earth, Africa, Latin America, South Asia and Oceania all appear larger and more accurate than they do on a Mercator map. The campaign's request eventually reached the African Union, which endorsed it, and Togo took the lead in bringing it to the UN General Assembly (UNGA). On Friday, Sept. 4, the UNGA voted on a resolution called "Correct the Map," which calls the Equal Earth projection a more accurate way to represent the world's continents. 164 countries voted in favor, with the US the only country to vote against it and six countries abstaining. Togo's foreign minister Robert Dussey said that a fair world begins with a fair map, adding that maps shape how people learn, imagine and understand the world around them.
