Leading the Dutch West India Company fleet, Hein intercepted the Spanish convoy carrying silver and other valuables from the Americas to Spain. Using superior tactics, he blocked their escape routes and forced the Spanish to surrender without a major battle. The captured treasure, worth over 11 million guilders, was a massive financial boost for the Dutch Republic and a severe blow to Spain’s economy.
