@mbari_news: What do you think this little guy’s innie is doing? 👀 The swordtail squid, Chiroteuthis calyx, is relatively common in the Monterey Bay between 100 and 900 meters (330 and 2,950 feet) but has also been observed at depths over 1,500 meters (4,920 feet). The swordtail squid’s body, not including the tentacles, can reach up to 40 centimeters (over 15 inches) in length. ⁠ ⁠ Squids typically have eight arms and two feeding tentacles. Adults of this species move into deeper water and develop long-feeding tentacles tipped with glowing lures used to attract crustaceans or small fish.
