I did a reel a while ago on honey and it was one of my most-watched ever—so many people were shocked to learn that most supermarket honey is a blend of EU and non-EU honey and that honey fraud is a big issue globally. What you’ll see when you look at the standard supermarket honeys on the shelves is that they are a blend of Non-EU honey or a blend of EU & Non-EU honey and the reason suppliers are blending the honey from different countries is because they are buying the cheapest honey they can find and then mixing it together. And tests have found that sometimes they are also mixing in sugar syrup to make the product even cheaper to manufacture. So we just don’t really know what we’re getting when we buy the standard supermarket honey on the shelves! If you want to buy good quality honey, read the label and find one that says it’s raw and unblended and states the country of origin. I was delighted to spot this raw and unblended honey from Mileeven in the Special Buy section in Aldi. This is the kind of honey I always look for—single origin, clearly labelled, and raw so you’re getting all the benefits. Raw honey is rich in antioxidants, vitamins & minerals and has antibacterial properties. However when honey is processed, a lot of this goodness is lost. Yes, it’s more expensive than the generic jars that say things like “100% pure honey,” but once you know the difference, it’s easy to see why. You’re paying for real single origin honey, not a processed blend with a misleading name.
