@livinglarsonhome: Double tap if this was helpful! More details👇 Building a custom mantel doesn't have to be complicated! Here's how I made mine using (2) 2x8s and (1) 2x6 from @The Home Depot : 1. Cut the boards: I beveled one edge of each 2x8 at 45° and both edges of the 2x6. Then, I cut them all to 72" with beveled ends. For the side pieces, I cut (2) 7¼" pieces from the 2x6, with one side beveled at 45°. 2. Assemble the mantel: Using tape to hold the pieces together, I added blocking, @Titebond Products wood glue, and secured it with 2" 18-gauge finish nails. 3. Fill, sand, stain: I filled any gaps with woodfiller, sanded with 120 & 220 grit, then stained with @Varathane Dark Walnut and sealed with an oil-based satin polyurethane. 4. Install it: I mounted a 2x2 cleat to the wall andsecured the mantel with (5) 3" screws. And just like that, those boards were turned into something custom and beautiful! And if the bevels seem too complicated, just butt the boards together and don't worry about the bevel!
