After completing walking lunges with 70kg on my back, I was complimented (by a man) for my flat stomach… not my strength. And that right there is the problem. The problem is how we think about our bodies. For so long, women have been taught that the most valuable thing about us is how small, lean, or “pretty” we are. Not how strong we are. Not how capable. Not how powerful. We shrink ourselves, literally and mentally, to be more palatable. We celebrate weight loss over progress in the gym. We obsess over thigh gaps, flat stomachs, and cellulite instead of strength, resilience, and health. This mindset doesn’t just come from nowhere. It’s reinforced in everyday comments like that one. And when you’ve been conditioned to view your body through a lens of appearance only, it’s hard to see your body as yours - a home, not a project. But I need you to know: Your body is not here to please anyone Your body is not “better” when it’s smaller And you are allowed to take up space Strength is beautiful. Power is beautiful. You are beautiful because you are more than a flat stomach. Let’s start unlearning the idea that we have to earn our worth through weight loss. Let’s start celebrating women for what they can do, not just how they look while doing it.
