@whileyouwonder: Does your battery stop suddenly or deplete gradually? 🔋🪫 Many autistic people experience a sudden drop in social energy—often described as a “social battery” running out (Mantzalas et al., 2022). Knowing you’re autistic and making self-accommodations has been linked to better mental health outcomes (Botha & Frost, 2020). 💛 As always, what I share is based on my experience as an autistic autism assessor and speech pathologist, the lived experiences of the autistic community, and what I’ve seen across 8 years of autism assessments. These insights reflect common themes I’ve observed in 'clinical' settings, assessment conversations, and client storytelling. It may not apply to everyone, and research is still catching up on a lot of this! While this content is not intended as clinical advice, it draws on my lived and professional experience to make space for shared understanding and further discussion. I’d love to see even more research in this space, and I’m always open to chatting with or supporting researchers – especially autistic researchers – who feel called to explore and build on these insights. There’s so much more to discover together! 🌻 #autism #adhd #neurodivergent #autismassessor

When my social battery runs out I turn into such a jerk. I start being rude and mean and then regret it later. I have learned that when I start making sarcastic remarks it is time to go home.

My husband calls it "turning into a pumpkin" ala Cinderella 😂 Anytime he sees me fading, he says "welp, it's pumpkin time" and we leave ❤️

Finding out I'm autistic allowed me to find the self-compassion I needed, instead of 'toughing it out' and burning out.

I did my first big accommodation for myself yesterday and wore noise canceling headphones at a kids museum in the giant noisy room. My kid didn’t care, other people didn’t care, and I had a better day

😳😳😳 I've been doing this for years but always attributed to introversion... the past year I've been thinking there may be more than just being introverted.

Then something unexpected happens & it’s like losing a life in a video game except you get put back in the same place in the same situation but zero battery life left 😱

I would be hanging out with my friends in HS and then I stop talking for 5 minutes and then all of a sudden, talking is hard and I'm exhausted😕

The amount of times I «go to the bathroom» during social events is crazy. I sit there with my head in hands just breathing 😮💨 telling myself «you can do this»

long before I knew i was autistic, my husband would get upset becoz I was really sociable when at family get-togethers then really quiet once we left; knowing the reason would've saved a lot of upset

You’re my favourite page when it comes to informing autistic people about their experiences. I especially love your comparison between NTs and NDs. It helps me navigate the world more efficiently 💖

I'm still learning myself since finding out I'm autistic. I understand my social battery better, but haven't figured out the adjustments to my life to better accommodate myself.

One of the reasons I really want to know because I feel like once I started giving myself accommodations, I became like 50% happier. Doesn’t seem to be another logical reason 😉

mine stops suddenly. I mean there's a slight sign that I'm now aware of that it's coming- but it happens so fast I'm left in an awkward spot always..
