I watched my mother slowly lose the light in her eyes. She gave up on herself. I pray all the time she has the strength to heal, find happiness, and live a meaningful life for herself.

My dad took our only vehicle when he & my mom divorced, he left her w/no car & she had all us 5 kids. We walked everywhere. As an adult I told him how inconsiderate that was of him & how we would cry from having to walk so far to places & my lil brother was just 5. My poor mom.

He drained her dry. She learned to expect nothing and stop dreaming. She died and he’s still around. I hate that.

She always has to do everything (cooking, cleaning etc…) and if she doesn’t he gets frustrated. My mom told me she found no meaning in her life and was waiting for death 💔 this broke my heart.

My mother has dementia— her short term memory is just gone. I’m 100% sure it’s bc 60 years with my dad made her brain just clock out as a form of protection.

So very true - even the positives (how he expresses tenderness towards our mother, or tries to comfort her, make her laugh, or laughs with her) is something we absorb like a sponge and recreate later in our relationships (mostly unconsciously, and realize only after introspection).
