@andrewvalenti.av: Pruning a Plum Tree It might seem like I took a lot off. I did. But this tree will be all the better for it. Sometimes when it comes to tree pruning you need an intervention to get the tree back to a place where you want it to be. With fruit trees, that means being able to easily harvest the fruit. You're also looking at the overall shape of the tree so that ample sunlight can reach all the branches and so air can flow through them. I start by walking around the tree and assessing. Then remove any ivy or water sprouts at the base. Then I remove the 3 D's - Dead, Damaged, and Diseased branches. Then it is a matter of shaping and opening up the center, removing any branches that are crossing over one another, and bringing the height down. This is where you can start training new growth to go in the direction you want it to grow. A general rule of thumb is that you can safely prune off 30% of the tree every year (depending). When you need to prune more, the trick is making sure it gets a lot of extra nutrients (compost, fertilizer) so that it can bounce back nice and strong.
