The Japanese thing to do would be to formally write in a complaint letter!

I once asked for extra ketchup packets at McDonald’s which apparently required a conversation with the manager in order to get approval.

I love this. But it's also true Japanese customer service is NOT that great in many contexts. I have a theory about why. I'm going to make a TikTok about it hahaha

Living in Japan made me realize that there is a script for EVERYTHING, if you suddenly try improv, they will malfunction. I once tried to order scrammbled eggs instead of sunny side. Bad idea.

Japan is old skool when it comes to computers and systems. They prob wanted you to fax in a letter request and wait for them to call you back after a few days. 🤣🤣🤣

Japan: Where every interaction is a polite 'Welcome to our rules. They can't even change you le eggs from boiled to scramble without asking the CEO. 😭😭

This is 💯 they are polite and efficient but as soon as you deviate from their protocol, you’re shit out of luck lol

YEPPPP. They only operate in a robotic-like matter and you are just expected to be inconvenienced instead of them using critical thinking skills to make a slight change to anything.

I was thinking the whole time about the lady who waited for you that one time and escorted you to your plane waiting on you. Then hearing this… like you are royalty so they should have known!

From my very uneducated humble opinion, I feel like some ppl/cultures excel in following rules, but not so much in free thinking and resourceful problem solving.

High distance cultures (like Japan) are great at creating systems. The front lines of the systems are awful at being empowered to make decisions when things don’t follow script.

Remove tomato from meal? But it’s included and prepared in house for the sandwich, designed by the chef, not possible regrettably as where would the tomato then go ?

I was stuck in narita after the earthquake in 2011. Local AA not helpful. Had to call American AA to get in the only flight to US that night. Even then the local AA didn’t believe I had a seat 💺 .

That statement is 100% true. Best customer service until you deviate from the script. Then all hell breaks loose

I also agree. When I was in Japan customer service or waiters sort of freaked out a little if we didn’t do exactly what they expected.

You are right, it is embarrassing when the customer knows more about the company’s policy than the employee. Employee! How dare you shame your company in this matter 🙈?!

Oh boy, if I were the CEO of an airline would mandate every employee to “identify” you so that the company won’t be called out on TikTok! 😆

Non-Japanese theory — the agent may have been a contractor and perhaps trained across multiple carriers. They should do better, but may be constrained by lack of experience
