Founded by escaped enslaved people in the 16th century, San Basilio de Palenque is known today for its rich heritage, characterized by a unique blend of African traditions, Spanish influences, and indigenous customs. Also referred to as just “Palenque,” the town is famous for its distinct language, gastronomy, and history.
